Musical Monday

It wasn't that long ago that everyone was into the swing revival. As a fan of original swing, I loved the renewed interest. Here is one of my faves. Please enjoy "Zoot Suit Riot" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies

In Memoriam...

One year ago today, we lost the arguably the greatest entertainer of our time, Michael Jackson. As a die hard MJ fan, I want to use this time to honor his memory.

Newness

Yay! It got here! The new computer is here.

Now comes the fun part. Hooking it up and moving files over, not to mention formatting this one and getting rid of the old desktop that hasn't worked for two years.

This thing looks awesome, lemme tell ya! Hope it works as well as it looks.

Next new thing to get...TV, that little menu popping problem I've been having is getting progressively worse! UGH!

Oh well, as long as the set itself works, is all that matters. *knock on wood8

In the meantime, time to play with my new toy! :)

Eye Candy Father's Day edition

As I promised on Mother's Day, this week's edition of eye candy is solely on the hot fathers. Since I have no knowledge of what's hot and what's not when it comes to men, I let the little woman pick these out, so don't blame me if you don't like. Enjoy, ladies!

Hot Celebrity Dad: Will Smith

Hard to believe that the biggest movie star on the planet was once a skinny rapper, huh? I get requests for this guy every week, so I figure what better time to put him back on here, right?

Hot Dad from the music world: Chris Martin

The lead singer of Coldplay and father of Gwyneth Paltrow's kids was chosen for this spot. Codplay's music is hit or miss with me, but the guy does have talent.

Hot Movie Star Dad: Ben Affleck

Ben had that whole thing with Jennifer Lopez (including the ultra forgettable movie Gigli), then moved on to Jennifer Garner and now has two girls with her. Sorry he hasn't been featured before, ladies.

Hot Dad from the Movies: Carlisle Cullen from the Twilight Saga (Peter Facinelli)

The patriarch of the Cullen clan in the Twilight series, Carlisle has been deemed by certain women I know as "infinitely hotter than the overhyped, greasy vampire boy and steroid infused Sharkboy turned wolf".

Classic/retro hot Dad: Mickey Hargitay

The final dad on this Father's Day is the lucky man who married Jayne Mansfield. Both she and his daughter, Mariska Hargitay, have been featured here at eye candy. Harigtay is a former Mr. Universe and did appear in a couple of movies here and there (mostly with Jayne).

Moment of pride

As a teacher, I'm always listening out for good thing my students, past and present, accomplish. I was brimming with excitement when the local high school football show said that one of my first students was (according to them) the best player in the state for this past year, and they look for big things from him at LSU and if he goes pro.

Obviously, its too early to tell anything, but these are good signs. However, he wasn't that great of a student when I had him in 8th and 9th grade. If you've ever seem the move Friday Night Lights, he was like Boobie Miles in terms of his attitude towards anything non-football or basketball.

He did seem to like playing tuba, though. It just happened to be the thing that had to go. These things happen. If what they say is true, then maybe he made the right choice. In the meantime, its just good to hear then name of one of my former students mention in the same company as some NFL greats from this state.

Stupidity knows no bounds

So, this afternoon I had lunch with an old friend from college. Nothing fancy, just catching up and reminiscing and all that junk. Somehow we got to talking about the shows we watched, didn't watch, or didn't get to watch because of studying, work, practice, etc. I was surprised to find out that her reasoning for not watching a couple of them, though.

Now, we all have our reasons for watching, say, Glee, but detesting something like Law & Order (just using an example. However, I doubt any of us refuse to watch them because of a lack of a certain race.

Yeah, she refused to watch Seinfeld, Friends, and there was something else that I can't think of right now, for the simple fact that there were no black people on there.

Three things about this. First off, she's so white albinos look tan compared to her. Second, how anyone can base their TV habits on race is beyond me, especially if their not of that race. Lastly, she's a fan of Sex & the City, and the couple of episodes I've seen of that overrated mess weren't exactly a melting pot of ethnicites, either, so it's kind of hypocritical.

Now, having said all this, it should be remembered that these are shows from years gone by, and she has matured since then. Just the notion is so stupid that I was taken aback.

Just had to get that out. Thanks for listening...er...reading

Eye Candy 6/13

Female Hottie: Giada de Laurentiis

Hands down one of the hottest creatures to ever grace the screens of the Food Network or step into a kitchen, Giada de Laurentiis is this week's female hottie. This recent MILF can currently be seen as a mentor of The Next Food Network Star and lending her voice to a character on Handy Manny.

Male Hottie: Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper is quickly becoming one of the hottest men in Hollywood. Currently starring as Face in the recently released A-Team, Cooper has also starred in The Wedding Crashers, The Hangover, All About Steve, and Valentine's Day just to name a few. He also had a bit of a television career appearing on shows like Sex & the City, Jack & Bobby, and most notably Nip/Tuck. I'm sure women all over the world are more than happy they're getting more than their fair share of this guy.

Random Hottie from a movie or TV show seen this week: Alexis Dziena

This week's random hottie comes to us from the movie Fool's Gold. Alexis Dziena's biggest role of her young career, however, my have been as the villainous Tris in Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. She was last seen in When in Rome. I'm sure she'll be in more than a few things soon enough, though.

MILF: Vera Farmiga

Our MILF is not exactly a household name, but she is one hot mama. Vera Farmiga has been gaining steam with her career with appearances in Orphan, The Departed, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and her critically acclaimed performance in Up in the Air. already the mother of a son, Vera is expecting a girl in October.

Classic/Retro Hottie: Elisabeth Shue

One of the hottest actresses from the 80s is this week's classic hottie, Elisabeth Shue. Elisabeth appeared in the first Karate Kid, Back to the Future II, Back to the Future III, Adventures in Babysitting, Hollow Man, Leaving Las Vegas, Hamlet 2, and the forthcoming Piranha 3-D. After some lean years, it looks as if her career is primed for a comeback.

Beggars shouldn't be choosy

Let's face it, in the past, there was prejudice and hatred toward other races, and while that hasn't totally been eradicated, it is far from the levels it achevied in the 50-60s and before.

Today, that same intolerance and hatred is thrown out towards those of the gay community. What brings this up?

Well, I just heard a headline saying some state was upholding a ban on blood donations from gay men. WTF?!?

First of all, if I'm not mistaken, in many places blood is not exactly as abundant as water. Second, why only gay men? Is there something in gay male blood that gay females don't have? Third, what if a gay man has one of the rare blood types and is the only one within, say a 200 mile radius and can save person's life, but because of this ban, the person that needs the blood is as good as dead.

Honestly, is there really a point to this either to fuel some hate filled, fear fueled agenda by some overly conservative nutbag who thinks that they are right and everyone else is wrong.

I'm going to look for a little bit morei nfo on this later on today and see what the deal is, but I can already imagine its just going to infurate me even further.

If I needed blood, I wouldn't care where it came from as long as it was healthy, and that's the way it should be. A gay man's blood is no different than a straight man's blood.

These people need to stop trying to make the gay community seem like inferior citizens. Isn't it bad enough most states won't let them get married? Now you want to ban them from giving blood? What's next, just round them up and throw them in jail for the crim of being gay? It seems like that's where this is heading.

Eye Candy 6/6

Female Hottie: Keshia Knight Pullium

Our first hottie for this week is one of my very first crushes. Keshia Knight Pullium is best known as Rudy Huxtable, the adorable youngest child from The Cosby Show. After the show ended Keshia disappeared from the spotlight, save for a couple of made-for-TV movies, like Polly, so she could focus on school. In 2004 she made her return in the music video for rapper Chingy's "One Call Away" and starred in Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah. Today, she can be seen starring in the TBS comedy Tyler Perry's House of Payne.

Male Hottie: Paul Walker

Paul Walker has been around for quite awhile, but may best be known for his roles in the Fast & Furious franchise. He has also starred in moves such as Pleasantville, She's All That, Into the Blue, Varsity Blues, and more recently, Takers (coming out in August). He has also appeared in television hits such as Highway to Heaven, Charles in Charge, Who's the Boss?, The Young and the Restless, and Touches By an Angel. This guy has had a career, huh? I'm sure there are more than a few ladies out there clamoring for more of this guy.

Random Hottie from a movie or TV show seen this week: Mindy Kaling

This week's random hottie comes to us from Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, but Mindy Kaling can be seen weekly on the American version of The Office. Aside from being a great comedic actress, she also has written a few episodes. Here's hoping we get to see more of her soon.

MILF: Robyn Lively

This week's MILF is perhaps best known for her work as a child star in the 80s, with movies such as Teen Witch and Karate Kid, part III. These days this mother of 3 has a recurring role on Saving Grace and has appeared on Cold Case. It's a shame we don't hear more from her, though.

Classic/Retro Hottie: Rue McClanahan

This week we lost our classic hottie. Rue McClanahan is best known as Blanche Devereaux (my favorite) on The Golden Girls. Many forget she had a career before then, though, starring in shows such as Maude with Bea Arthur (she took over the role Lucille Ball made famous on the big screen), Another World, Gimme a Break, Mama's Family and countless others. Her last TV role was a guest spot on Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns in December. On the big screen she didn't have as much success but did appear in a few films such as They Might Be Giants, Annabelle's Wish, The Unholy Choice, Starship Troopers, and The Fighting Temptations. She will be missed.

A "little" humor

got this in an e-mail today, and figured i'd share..

Roy's Winky.....

Roy decided to propose to Sandy, but prior to her acceptance Sandy felt she had to confess to her man about her childhood illness. She informed Roy that she suffered a disease that left her breasts at the maturity of a 12
year old.

He stated that it was OK because he loved her sooo much. However, Roy felt this was also the time for him to open up and admit that he had a deformity too.
Roy looked Sandy in the eyes and said, 'I too have a problem. My winky is the same size as an infant and I hope you can deal with that once we are
married.'

She said, 'Yes, I will marry you and learn to live with your infant size
winky.'

Sandy and Roy got married and they could not wait for the honeymoon. Roy whisked Sandy off to their hotel suite and they started touching, teasing, and holding one another.

As Sandy put her hands in Roy's pants, she began to scream and ran out of
the room! Roy ran after her to find out what was wrong.

She said, 'You told me your winky was the size of an infant!'

'Yes, it is ... 7 pounds, 8 ounces, 19 inches long

Protest

I've heard of protesting various things, such as killing animals, certain controversial movies, etc., but to protest the spelling bee? WTF?!?

The nation's capital always draws its share of protesters, picketing for causes ranging from health care reform to immigration policy.

But spelling bee protesters? They're out here, too.

Four peaceful protesters, some dressed in full-length black and yellow bee costumes, represented the American Literacy Council and the London-based Spelling Society and stood outside the Grand Hyatt on Thursday, where the Scripps National Spelling Bee is being held. Their message was short: Simplify the way we spell words.

Roberta Mahoney, 81, a former Fairfax County, Va. elementary school principal, said the current language obstructs 40 percent of the population from learning how to read, write and spell.

"Our alphabet has 425-plus ways of putting words together in illogical ways," Mahoney said.

The protesting cohort distributed pins to willing passers-by with their logo, "Enuf is enuf. Enough is too much."

According to literature distributed by the group, it makes more sense for "fruit" to be spelled as "froot," "slow" should be "slo," and "heifer" — a word spelled correctly during the first oral round of the bee Thursday by Texas competitor Ramesh Ghanta — should be "hefer."

Meanwhile, inside the hotel's Independence Ballroom, 273 spellers celebrated the complexity of the language in all its glory, correctly spelling words like zaibatsu, vibrissae and biauriculate.

While the protesters could make headway with cell phone texters who routinely swap "u" for "you" and "gr8" for "great," their message may be a harder sell for the Scripps crowd.

Mahoney had trouble gaining traction with at least one bee attendee. New Mexico resident Matthew Evans, 15, a former speller whose sister is participating in the bee this year, reasoned with her that if English spellings were changed, spelling bees would cease to exist.

"If a dictionary lists 'enough' as 'enuf,' the spelling bee goes by the dictionary, therefore all the spelling words are easier to spell, so the spelling bee is gone," Evans said.

"Well," Mahoney replied, "they could pick their own dictionary."

Is it just me, or do these people seem like they aren't all there? Seriously, enough should be spelled enuf? What kind of foolishness is that?

I don't know, maybe I'm just tapping into that English minor I have as well as my regional spelling bee titles (never got to the state level...GRRR!!!), but this just seems wrong beyond wrong.

Not sure which is worse, though, the fact these people are holding this pointless protest because they feel certain words should be spelled a certain way (most likely because they think its easier or that's how they text), or that they think they actually have a point!

I hate to say it, but some folks should have their free speech rights revoked!
