Death is all around

Good morning, fellow bloggers! It is with a heavy heart that I type this post, as the past few weeks have surrounded me with death.

First, a couple of my friends from college lost their 2 yr old son. He had been dealing with some kind of sinus thing....not sure exactly what it was, then one day he was gone. She's still taking it pretty hard, from what I hear, she hasn't cracked a smile since it happened, which is pretty bad for someone that is almost always smiling.

Second, my friend, teacher, and mentor passed away the next day. Now, he had collapsed on stage back in October from a brain tumor, but seemed to have been recovering, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I cannot stress how that I would not be the musician I am today without his tutelage.

Third, my high school put up a memorial page for all that have passed over the years. Nothing really wrong with that, until I looked through and realized how many people I know that have passed on, most from stupid reasons like drunk driving!

Finally, and this is the one that hit me the hardest, one of my best friends and fraternity/sorority sisters from college passed away yesterday morning of a sudden heart attack. Making this even harder is the fact that I talked to her (through e-mail) a few hours before her death. She had said that she had been suffering from food poisoning from the past couple of weeks, but I wonder if she was trying to not tell me something more was wrong. I even joked about coming up to take care of her if she didn't get better. Little did I know....

*SIGH*

Needless to say, I'm not in my usual happy-go-lucky mood right now. This time of year is always hard for me, as 10 years ago, I lost my grandfather.

On a positive note, though, it is now spring break! Not having to drag myself out of bed every morning is sure to help!

Thanks for reading, everyone! I promise my next post won't be so dark and morose.

Road beef

What is it with driver's today that think they're entitled to everything? I have a couple of real beefs to grip out this evening!

First, on the interstate, traffic was a wee bit backed up, and what do some people decide to do? Some we doing their best to weave in and out (not getting where they're going any faster and nearly causing accidents along the way), and others thought where they were going is so important that they can drive on the shoulder and in the parts where no one is to supposed to be driving, only to force their way over at the last minute. WTF?!?

My other beef is one that I've mentioned in a previous blog post. People who wait for you to put away your groceries just so that can get a parking spot. I'm already not a fan of anyone that does this, but today I my disdain for these people had been magnified. As this lady was sitting in her car, it looked like she was balancing her checkbook, this couple who was waiting for the spot started honking like a madman! WTF?!?

I try to be keep a civil tongue about such things, but there comes a point when enough is enough! Next person who tries to get ahead in line on the interstate won't be getting ahead of me, regardless of the danger to them or me! It will serve them right!

As far as the yuppie scum who think they can rush someone out of the spot. Let them do that to me and I'll get out of the car and go right back in the store!

UGH! Excuse me while I let out a primal scream of frustration!

Thanks for reading!

Got milk

With all the things going on in the world today, you'd think the government would have better things to worry about than the price of milk?

For Lafayette stockbroker Kenneth Daigle, buying a gallon of milk is no longer the bargain it used to be on Tuesdays at Fresh Market.
The upscale supermarket chain yanked milk from its $2.99 once-a-week promotion after a state auditor objected to the low price. A gallon of whole milk was priced at $5.69 Thursday at the Fresh Market in Perkins Rowe.
State Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain said Fresh Market violated state regulations by selling milk below cost as part of a promotion.

The supermarket routinely sells a gallon of skim, 1 percent, 2 percent or whole milk for $2.99 on Tuesdays, limiting the quantity to four per customer.
State law requires retailers’ markups to be no less than 6 percent of the invoice cost after adding freight charges.
The Dairy Stabilization Board oversees milk prices in Louisiana. The board was established after Schwegmann, a New Orleans-area grocery chain, launched a legal battle in the 1970s with the Louisiana Milk Commission to buy milk from out-of-state suppliers because it was cheaper.
The issue over Fresh Market’s milk involves the cost of milk to consumers rather than the price paid to farmers.
“They can sell it 6 percent over cost all day long. It’s when they sell it below cost that it becomes a problem,” Strain said.
During the second week of January, the price for a gallon of whole milk in Baton Rouge ranged from $4 to $6.89.
Strain said his office dispatched an auditor to the Fresh Market in Mandeville after receiving a complaint about the Tuesday promotion. His press office declined to identify the complainant.
During the visit, the auditor explained the regulations to store officials, Strain said.
Daigle learned about the change in price when he plunked down a gallon of milk at the cash register Tuesday at the Fresh Market two blocks from his office.
He routinely buys two gallons of milk at the sale price. He puts one gallon in the refrigerator and freezes the other.
This time, the milk rang up at the nonsale price. When Daigle questioned the price tag, the cashier told him the state had come down on the store.
Fresh Market’s corporate headquarters referred media questions to the Atlanta-based BRAVE Public Relations.
BRAVE released a prepared statement from Drewry Sackett, Fresh Market’s marketing, public relations and community relations manager.
Sackett said the promotion applied to the store’s private label, rBST-free milk.
“Because milk is a commodity product with regulated costs that are subject to change, at the current cost, due to Louisiana state law, we are unable to honor the $2.99 Tuesday deal for (Fresh Market) milk … Because the cost of milk fluctuates, it is possible that we will be able to offer the $2.99 deal on milk again in the future,” Sackett said.
Daigle said he is outraged that the state would intervene in order to control a retail store’s prices.
“Should we do the same thing with bread? Should we do the same thing with soft drinks?” he asked.
Strain said the regulations exist to keep the price of milk as low as possible.
Allowing a supermarket to sell milk below cost could drive competitors out of business, allowing the store to then increase the price of milk, he said.
Daigle disagrees with Strain’s approach.
He said it is understandable for states to regulate the wholesale price, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their labor.
Controlling the price on the grocery store shelf is heavy-handed, Daigle said.
“If retailers want to take a loss, so be it,” he said.

I understand that cheap milk would bring about the end of the world, but good grief, would it really be so bad to not have to shell out an arm and a leg from a gallon of milk? *SIGH* I guess its just the world we live in.

What do you think?

Youth and texting

My heart is heavy today, as two deaths have been brought to my attention.

The first is a childhood friend of mine who was on his way to work when he was killed by a teenager. Yes, I said a teenager. Do you know how he was killed?!? This kid was texting and driving! Anyone still think cellphones aren't dangerous?

As sad as his loss is, I think the one I just found out about was even worse. A couple of friends of mine lost their 15 month old son. Aside from the absurdly young age, this is sad because the cause of death is unknown, they had trouble getting pregnant with him, and I seem to recall him being born a little earlier than planned.

Needless to say, today has not been a good day. However, I'm not one to let deaths get me down. I know that both are in a better place now, and that's all that matters.

If you are the praying type, please do so for both families. Sacrifices are also accepted...lol

Blame the governor

So, the Super Bowl was played last night. Yes, I watched it but, as neither team is one I normally cheer for, I didn't really have a dog in the fight. I found myself pulling more the Ravens, mainly because I wanted Ray Lewis to go out on a high note.

Here's the rub, though. This Super Bowl is probably the closest I'll ever come to seeing one. It was played an hour away over there in New Orleans. Having spent quite some time in that city, this week it was nice seeing familiar places on TV.

Normally, this game is played in other places that I have never been and/or am not familiar with, such as next year's game in New York. (I already feel sorry for the players having to go up there in the cold).

I'm not going to comment on the game, but that power outage, which was quite odd, can't be overlooked. As soon as it happened, some of my facebook friends started posting all kinds of smarmy comments.

As many of my friends are brainwashed fans of the team that normally plays in that building, they thought they had something to do with it, others said it was the 49ers attempting to hit the reset button, but the best one was that it was the governor's fault, because he's a spoiled brat and felt like it. I couldn't help but get a laugh out of that one.

Anyway, I just wanted to get some thoughts out. Thanks for reading!

Lockdown

I've been under the weather since the past couple of days, but hearing that the kids up at the high school didn't get to go home until 5 or 6 yesterday had me curious, especially since its Friday and school is out at 2:30. Well, here is the answer
A 16-year-old boy was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of bringing a sawed-off shotgun to Port Allen High School, according to the West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office. Another student saw noticed the butt of the shotgun and reported it at about 2:30 p.m., said Col. Richie Johnson. The 16-year-old tried to put the gun in a trash can, Johnson added. The school was placed on lockdown for about 20 minutes. The 16-year-old faces charges of terrorizing, carrying a firearm on a school campus, and possessing a sawed-off shotgun, Johnson said. Police aren't identifying the boy because he's a juvenile.
With all the talk of kids coming to school with guns that we hear on the news, this is the closest it has ever come to me personally. My friends, colleagues, and the kids at the high school seemed to be shook up a bit by this.

Truth be told, if not for a meeting with my principal, I would have been up at the high school, as well. From what I hear, this kid just transferred in from Florida and was already on probation.

We'll have to see what happens as far as fallout from all this. I have to wonder why he would bring a shotgun to school, though. A pistol is one thing, but a shotgun? On top of that, how did he sneak it in?

Anyway, just felt like sharing. Thanks for listening!

Really, people, really?!?

In the last few years of my grandfather's life, he would come up and visit us. Whenever he went anywhere in our car, my mom would put up that hanging handicapped sticker. That allowed us to park in the handicapped spot, but with good reason.

In this apartment complex, there are people that just park in the handicapped spot because they are either lazy or don't care. I'm not really sure which it is. I don't get it, though!

Do people really have that little respect for the rules and laws? Do they think they are that much better than the rest of us that they deserve a spot like that? Perhaps it is the fact that they they have at least 6 children (maybe more) that makes them eligible?

I don't know, you have to tell me, but it just isn't right, if you ask me.

True, there aren't any handicapped people living here, as far as I know, but that doesn't mean that little sign shouldn't be respected. The rest of us follow it!

There are 4 police officers living here and one of them actually gets paid to do so (some sort of security thing), and yet none of them have said anything.

*SIGH*

I wonder if we did have someone handicapped living here if that spot would still be occupied by these people that have no home training!

That's all for now! Thanks for reading!!!
