To the scene of the crime?

So, we have another contest this weekend. Hopefully all the work we've put in the past couple weeks will pay off and we won't feel like we bent over and took the shaft.

Normally, I'm as giddy as a school girl to be going to contests, but for some reason, this one has me a little spooked. Maybe because it is the day before Halloween, or maybe because it is taking place in the town where Jayne Mansfield was killed.

If you're a follower of my eye candy posts on this blog and various entries over on the movie blog, then you know I love Jayne Mansfield. I have her on the same pedestal with the likes of beauties sch as Halle Berry, Sofia Vergara, Salma Hayek, Scarlett Johansson (before she lost weight...and cup sizes), Christina Hendricks, etc.

If I believed in ghosts, I may have an inkling that her ghost would show up tomorrow, but I don't. Chances are we'll pass by a road marker that says where she was killed. more than likely, I'll be asleep...lol

In the meantime, we aren't going to tonight's game, due to the extreme distance, and are having an extended rehearsal to get ready for tomorrow. This may help or hurt, but at least we'll only have to be p at the school at 7:30 instead of 5:30, as was originally planned...lol

Eye Candy 10/24

Female Hottie: Rosario Dawson

Rosario Dawson claims the title on female hottie of the week. This multi-ethnic beauty was last seen as Persephone in the movie Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. A bonafide movie star with model looks, Rosario is never out of work, and men (and some women) are always lusting after her. I'm sure we'll see more of her for a long time.

Male Hottie: Stephen Moyer

Since I don't have HBO, I don't get to watch shows like True Blood (awesome show, btw) until the DVDs come out. So, when the little woman borrowed the DVD of the first season last year, she fell in love with this guy. Not sure what else he has done, but he's a real good in his role, but those accents are so far from authentic, they're just funny to me. Enjoy ladies!

Random Hottie from a movie or TV show seen this week: Hayley Atwell

Hayley Atwell earns this spot for her time on the screen in the movie The Duchess. This buxom, curvy, brunette can be next be seen in the upcoming movie
Captain America: The First Avenger. Hopefully we'll see more of her on this side of the pond soon.

MILF: Catherine Zeta-Jones

Our MILF for the week is Catherine Zeta-Jones. Currently, she is lighting up Broadway in A Little night Music, for which she won a Tony Award. She was last seen on the big screen in The Rebound (a movie which hasn't been released in the US, yet). I have to say, after 2 kids and at her age, she looks pretty good.

Classic/Retro Hottie: Marilyn Monroe

Do I really need to say anything about this week's retro hottie? Marilyn Monroe may have had a relatively short career and life, but she left quite a legacy behind. It is hard to say what she is better know for, the many affairs she had, or her ditzy blonde persona, or maybe it was the tragic end to her life. Some of her movie credits include Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Some Like It Hot, Monkey Business, Some Like It Hot, Let's Make Love, How to Marry a Millionaire, The Prince and the Showgirl, The Seven Year Itch (where this iconic pose comes from), just to name a few. I still say that Jayne Mansfield was the better actress as well the more attractive of the two (you can argue who was prettier...my vote goes to Marilyn on that one), but that's like comparing McDonald's and Burger King...similar, yet different. One thing is for sure, though, Marilyn is a true retro hottie!

Contest

Last Saturday was up and down for me. I say that because the band kids went did their best show of the season, yet didn't get rewarded for it. How is this possible you ask? I really have no idea. You have to ask the judges.

Let me talk about the judges for a second. They ripped the band for the usual stuff (off step, step size, drummers not sticking together, etc.) These are the little things that both myself and Bossman attributed to nerves of being the first contest and not getting to really perform this season, so we accepted that, but some of the other mess they got us for was just nit picky.

Now, I have no issue with nit picky judges. How else can you get better than with the judges that are complete assholes (pardon my French). They are usually the ones that will tell it like it is and what you need to fix without sugar coating it, y'know? However, for almost all of the bands there, it was the first contest, so for me, I felt like they judged a bit hard.

As I said, the kids did their best performance of the season, but they didn't play as well as they did in warm-up, but it was still pretty darn good. There were some issues...mostly with the trashcan feature (if the video works below, you can see it.)

The day went on, and I was getting ansy. On top of that, most of the bands that performed during the day did rather boring shows. That isn't to say they were bad, just not really interesting.

Finally, after sitting in the direct sun for he entire day, it was time for the results. (note that the sun just happens to go down as they were about to start...WTF?!?)

Small class ratings are announced and they get to us. Auxiliary-I, Percussion- III, Band-III. You could hear a pin drop in the stadium. Most of the talk throughout he day was how well we did, and to come away with a III for full band did not feel good, but there is a silver lining. All but 1 of the bands in our class got the same rating.

I won't make excuses, but something tells me that there was a small band bias. Don't believe me? The middle and large bands almost all got I's, except for a couple, and trust me, their shows weren't as clean. It was just their mistakes weren't as obvious because of all their members.

Anyway, time for the best in class announcement. Last year we came in 2nd and were hoping to get the title this year. With a III, that wasn't going happen, but since almost all the bands in our class got the same thing, you never know.

Unfortunately, we didn't get it, but there was a controversy, especially after looking at the score sheet. Our auxiliary had a score of 199 out of 200. So, unless the school that got best in class had a perfect score, which I doubt, since they were dropping flags left and right from what I saw, then we should have gotten it. Rumor is since they came from Mississippi, the contest conspired to make sure they won, no matter what.

I seriously hope that this isn't the case. If it does turn out to be so, though, I can guarantee you we will not be going back.

There is not time to dwell on the past, though. We have two major contests ahead and have to clean things up and be ready for them. Hopefully Bossman whipped them into shape this week, while I've been sick. I also hope that the judges at the next contest won't have any anti-small band bias. This is getting pretty bad. I almost dare to say that there needs to be a contest specifically for small bands. Geesh!

You can watch the show here.

Eye Candy 10/17

Female Hottie: Sofia Vergara

This week's female hottie is a voluptuous, buxom beauty currently starring on the comedy hit Modern Family. My first time Sofia Vergara, though, was in the movie Soul Plane, where she had a minor role as a flight attendant. Amazing how far her career has come since then, huh? She is set to either lend her voice or appear in the upcoming Smurfs movie. We haven't seen the last of Sofia, that's for sure.

Male Hottie: Sting

Sting is this week's male hottie. Point of clarification, this is the singer, not the wrestler. Sting's early rise to prominence really took off as a member of the group The Police. In 1985, though, Sting embarked on a solo career, and well, the rest is history. Aside from music, Sting also has had cameo roles in a few films and TV shows and is a member and/or founder of a number of charities and causes.

Random Hottie from a movie or TV show seen this week: Regina Hall

Regina Hall, this week's random hottie, is best known for her roles in the Scary Movie franchise and her current gig on Law & Order: Los Angeles, but she earns this spot because of her role in Death at a Funeral.

MILF: Mary Louise Parker

Mary-Louise Parker has been around for a fair amount of time, not to maker her sound old, though. She is currently starring in Weeds. Last I saw her was in the movie Saved. She is the mother of two, one of which is adopted, and has a body like that. Wow! Can we say MILF?!?

Classic/Retro Hottie: Barbara Billingsley

Yesterday, we lost a truly classy lady, as Barbara Billingsley passed away. To honor her memory, she has earned the title of this week's retro hottie. Best known as June Cleaver from the classic sitcom Leave it to Beaver, Barbara has become synonymous with the image of the doting housewife of that era. Later in her career, she appeared in the movie Airplane!, Roseanne, MY Name is Earl, and lent her voice to Nanny on Jim Henson's Muppet Babies. She will surely be missed. Thank goodness for reruns and DVDs.

Pet Obesity Day?

Did you know that yesterday was pet obesity day? I didn't, but here's the thing...does it really matter? I mean, I have a rather fat cat, so what?

Since when is it a crime to have a fat pet? For that matter, why are there celebrity chefs making dog food now to keep dogs (no other animals, just dogs), from getting to be what "they" call obese.

I swear...this society is getting more and more obsessed with more and more things that don't really matter. Look, if a pet is fat, then let them be. Is there really a reason to devote an entire day to this "epidemic"?

Why not have a day for all the homeless pets? What about the lost pets that have ended up as roadkill? Maybe a spay/neuter day?

These all seem like better, more worthwhile ideas than a freakin' pet obesity day! Then again, maybe it's just me!

The storm before the calm?

As those that read my posts here will know, this has been a rather strange performance season for my band kids. We have our first contest Saturday and have only performed 2 1/2 times. With that thought in mind, Bossman decided to have them play for a JV game. I think the fact that our star trombone player is also a starter on the JV team had something to do with it.

Anyway, so we had our normal Tuesday practice, although it was a bit intense due to the pressure of the week. ***side note- you should see some of the stuff the kids have been putting on facebook. they are excited and pumped up for the weekend, and ready to work and do what it takes to be the best!***

The weather was predicted to get bad at like 2, then it kept getting pushed back, until it was supposed to hold off until 9. Boy were they wrong, but I'll get to that in a minute.

So, we do the whole marching into the (empty) stadium. I think there may have been a total of 10 people that weren't band parents or had something to do with the football teams there. We play a couple tunes to pass the time. For some strange reason, the kids forgot that they aren't supposed to play unless they are told to. I'm going to pass that off as a fluke, though.

So, as we are waiting for kickoff, I look over in the not so distant sky and you can see the rain forming. As practice ended, you could see the big black cloud enveloping the area, but it seemed to have passed...or so we thought.

The kickoff never happened. Not sure, but we believe that they just don't kick in JV. Also, the scoreboard wasn't on, and no one was announcing. WTF?!?

Bossman sends the booster president to talk to one of the assistant coaches and find ot some info. We play some more. The this odd occurrence happens. Behind the stadium you can see a rainbow forming. Over in the not so distant sky, though, this big black cloud looked to be doing some weird twisting and turning...sort of like it was trying to become a tornado.

Before too long, the tornado siren goes off, and the game was stopped, just as they had finally gotten the scoreboard on! Apparently, there is a law that if that siren goes off, the field has to be cleared for at least 15 minutes. Bossman asked the coach if we could go on and get ot performance out of the way. We were told, "...if anything happens, it's on you." Not exactly the kind of thing you want to hear, right? So, Bossman makes the decision to send the kids back to the bandroom. No sooner had he said that than it started to downpour.

If you are familiar with anything in the band world, then you may or may not know that woodwinds (flute, clarinets, saxophones) cannot get wet. Actually, no instrument should get wet, but woodwinds go straight to hell in a handbasket when they get the tiniest drop of water on them. Now, although most of these instrument are the crappy school horns (new ones are coming in any day now), it still sucks. On top of that, the microphones and stuff got wet. I'm not sure if they are waterproof or not, bt I would imagine so.

While we are sitting in the bandroom waiting for it to clear or just call it a night. Bossman ponders out loud whether this was a bad omen for Saturday. Let's hope not!

Anyway, after a good 20-45 minutes, the storm cleared off and the game resumed. We walked back down to the stadium and waited for halftime. Yeah, I know you're probably wondering why didn't we just go home. Well, this is a run through that we had to get in, if for nothing else than to see a video of stuff that can be corrected. In other words, this performance and subsequent taping could be the difference between placing and not placing.

Finally, halftime rolls around and they get to perform. Did I mention that the drum major had been throwing up all day and actually missed most of school and had to sit out of practice. She sucked it for the 8 minutes on the field, though, but at the end, you can tell she was ready to call it a day...er, night.

The performance was actually the best that they've don. Of course, this is the first time they've done the entire show, but that's beside the point. Sure there were some issues, but they can be fixed. The biggest thing to be aware of, though, is how they deal with all the distractions of the day and were able to pull it off.

It reminds me of what happened in band camp. We were rehearsing and all of a sudden the power went out. They kept playing and at the end of the song, put their horns down and remained calm. Incredible, especially when you consider how most of these kids are 8th and 9th graders!

Needless to say, I don't think we'll be doing anymore JV games unless we absolutely have to. Except for the burgers we got from the coaches afterwards, it seems as if something was conspiring against us!

Seriously?!?

I'm not one to talk politics. There are about a gazillion other blogs out there for that purpose. However, I was reading on some of team's message boards how that Obama is behind their losses. WTF?!?

OK...First off, I'm of the belief that if you don't like the president, then get off your butt, run for office, and see if you can do better. There is no reason to sit around bashing the man. Those that didn't vote didn't make their voice heard then, so why should people care now?

Second, how in tarnation can the president affect a team? Is he out there running the plays? Is he out there practicing (or not practicing) every day? Is he calling the plays? The answer to all these is no, so there is no way in hell he can cost a team anything. Not to mention that he is more than stressed out enough without having to worry about football strategy.

It amazes me the stupidity and utter hatred of some people out there. It just makes me sick!!!

Eye Candy (reboot)

Female Hottie: Halle Berry

Our first hottie needs no introduction, as she is one of the most beautiful women on the planet. Halle Berry's fame really took off with her appearance as Storm in the X-Men movie franchise and her Oscar win for Monster's Ball. As good as those were, I'm sure we wish we could all forget Catwoman. She has taken some time off to have a kid, but will be returning to the big screen with Frankie and Alice and Dark Tide.

Male Hottie: Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt may very well be known for being either the stupidest or luckiest man alive, depending on how you feel about Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie. Me, I'm more of an Aniston fan. Pitt has been making women's hearts swoon since he first showed up in Thelma & Louise. Since then, he has gone on to star in such blockbusters and Academy-Award worthy films such as Troy, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Fight Club, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford, Inglorious Basterds, just to name a few. Not to mention he has produced a few movies, such as Kick-Ass. I don't think any females are going to complain about seeing more of this guy. Listen for him in the upcoming CGI animated movie, Megamind.

Random Hottie from a movie or TV show seen this week: Erica Cox

The movie Bitten brings us this week's random hottie, Erica Cox. Don't bother looking for her anywhere else. It isn't likely you'll find her. Having said that, I think she is a model, but don't quote me. Nonetheless, she is one tasty piece of eye candy, and the only thing worth watching in Bitten. I was just told she has a small role in one of the later American Pie movies. Not sure which one, though.

MILF: Jenny McCarthy

Funny and hot best describes this week's MILF. While she may have her totally out there moments, Jenny McCarthy's hotness has never been in question. She has earned MILF status by having one son. The act that she crusades and campaigns to bring the public attention to his disease (autism), makes her that much hotter. Although Jenny isn't an actress, she can be seen on the screen once in awhile in movies or TV shows such as John Tucker Must Die, Scary Movie 3, My Name is Earl, Chuck, Santa Baby, etc. Hopefully, we'll see more of her soon.

Classic/Retro Hottie: Jayne Mansfield

You can make the argument about who was the bigger bombshell, Jayne or Marilyn. For me, I have to go with the more talented Jayne. Jayne Mansfield may have been overshadowed by Marilyn Monroe, and many in the media tried to create a rivalry between the two. Jayne has quite the resume, including films such as Promises! Promises! (the first nude scenes by a mainstream star), Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, The Girl Can't Help It, Too Hot to Handle, among others. Adding to her legacy, her daughter, Mariska Hargitay, is the star of Law & Order: SVU. It really is a shame Jayne's life came to such a tragic end.

Solace and Homecoming

A few weeks ago, I lost a good friend of mine to cancer. I try not to bring up such depressing things here on this blog, because, quite frankly, there are more than enough depressing things in this world.

Having said that, yesterday would have been her 30th birthday. The school she worked for took the time to do a bit of a memoriam. They sent balloons up to heaven and everything. It was quite touching from what I hear. I wanted to share this with you all. It was just too touching not to.

http://www.vrml.k12.la.us/dozier/facultyandstaff/bio/auxillary/aprilwinner/AprilWinnerArticle.htm

So, what does this have to do with homecoming? Well, here on the other side of the state, it is homecoming. Strangely enough, the song the court will be walking out to and the band kids will be playing is one of April's favorites, Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely".

Amazing how things can tie together, huh?

Quote of the week

Contrary to what most people say, the most dangerous animal in the world is not the lion or the tiger or even the elephant. It's a shark riding on an elephant's back, just trampling and eating everything they see. - Jack Handey

Growing Up Without a Cell Phone

This was sent to me yesterday, and I figured I'd share the hilarity...

If you are 50, or older, you might think this is hilarious!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill...Barefoot... BOTH ways... yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter – with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes ! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car... We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig? We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting ! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it! There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OH MY GOD !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING.

Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are. And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister! We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600 ! With games like, “Space Invaders” and “Asteroids”. Your screen guy was a little square!

You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on!

You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?!?! There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-finks! And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that! We actually had to plan cooking a baked potato for an hour~

And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores! And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were lucky, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place! See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1960 or any time before!

Retro Commercial Friday

Lack of performance

For any of you that ever been in or involved with anything that requires practicing and dress rehearsals, then you know that the last minute preparations and chance to show what you can do is crucial.

Well, my band kids have 3 contests in the next 5 weeks. In the span of that time, they will get to perform a total of 4 times (the contests and 1 home game). The reason for this is that first of all or football team has 3 home games all season. The first one was the season opener, the second is next week which is our homecoming, and the third is the last game of the season, which will be senior day.

We won't get to perform at either of our remaining home games (unless bossman decides to do a postgame). Like I said, next week is homecoming, and that is nothing more than standing still playing the same song (Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely...if I ever finish it...lol) over...and over...and over...and over...and over again, while the court walks through as slow as they possibly can.

The last home game is senior day. Tradition dictates we do a special show for the seniors, so that throws out that one.

As for the away games, apparently, it is the popular thing to play us for homecoming because every team we play, and I do mean EVERY team, is playing s for homecoming. No wonder we have all these away games!

So, where is the 4th performance? Well, in an effort to at least get 1 show in before contest, we're going to perform at a JV football game. There are two reasons for this. First, the star trombone player (who also plays football) will be playing, but, as he does on Friday nights, he'll run over at halftime, then run back. It's a chance to pay back the coach for not making him choose between the two, because we all know some coaches would have done just that. The second reason is that is shows good school spirit and its a performance...one that will be desperately needed.

As you can see, I'm none to thrilled with that way the football schedule has played out. I kind of had a notion it wold end up this way when it was released, but I was just joking around. Little did I know that I'd be right.

I'm sure the kids'll be fine. It just sucks that things have ended up having to play out this way.

Don't get me started on how many parents bitched and moaned about tonight's game, which was originally scheduled for last night...up until Monday. As if we have any control over the TV station deciding to go with another game to show!
