Eye Candy 2/28

Female Hottie: Sofia Vergara

This week's female hottie is making her second appearance here in the eye candy posts. Last time she was a MILF, and still is, but since then her career has taken a major upswing. Sofia Vergara was voted E!'s #1 voluptuous vixen. She can currently be seen on ABC's Modern Family. If the show isn't funny enough as it is, she definitely makes it a worthwhile watch. Who says women with curves can't have a career in Hollywood?

Male Hottie: Jeffrey Donovan

This week's male hottie is currently the star of Burn Notice on USA, but I know him best as the slimy, dirtbag from Hitch. He makes an appearance here by special request. I don't get the big deal with him, but whatever. He will be on the big screen with Angelina Jolie this summer in Changeling.

Random Hottie from a movie or TV show seen this week: Chelsea Handler

Since Chelsea had a birthday this week, what better time to finally get on here. Currently the host of her own late night talk show, Chelsea Lately, Chelsea continues to do stand-up across the country as well as continue on the path of a a bestselling author. Aside from these duties, Chelsea doesn't do much, but hey, considering how popular that show is, I would wager that would change sooner rather than later.

MILF: Nia Long

This week's MILF is one of those actresses that has an extensive resume, but not really any roles that would gain her instant fame. Her biggest jobs were as Lisa on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Brandi in Boyz N the Hood. For the first half of the season, her voice could have been heard as the voice of Roberta on The Cleveland Show. Currently, she has nothing in the works, but spending time with her 10 year old son, but that's sure to change before we even realize it.

Classic/Retro Hottie: Catherine Deneuve

Our retro hottie for this week is a French beauty from the 60s and 70s. Today's audiences may know her best from her guest appearance on Nip/Tuck. Her career has spanned the mediums of TV, movies, and modeling. Today at 66 (and not looking a day over 40...at most), she is still acting. I have to wonder...what is her secret?

Busy week and new policy

Greetings dear readers!

I must apologize for the lack of content this week, save for a couple of quote posts. I've been rather busy this week, and haven't really had the time to sit down and blog, not to mention the fact that I didn't really have anything to say. It happens. I'm not one of those people that blogs about every little thing I do, such as licking a stamp, closing a door, taking a shower, etc. I don't care to hear about all that stuff about ya'll and am sure you feel the same way about me.

Football season is over. I'm sure we are all aware of this by now. With the end of the season comes a change in policy around here. All through the season, the little woman was complaining how I don't spend Sundays with her. So,until the season starts back in September, I will not be dropping any cards on Sunday. Most of the time I did that while that was game was on anyway. So, I'm gong to become a 6 day a week dropper. No big, just gives me a break from being a zombie...lol

Quote for the day

Silence may be golden but duct tape is multi-colored.

Anyone remember privacy?

Privacy? Anyone have a clue what that used to be? It would appear not as we seem to want to know every little thing about everyone. A forthcoming blog with go more into depth on this topic, but for this morning, I'm focusing on Facebook. Yes, Facebook.

I remember when that site started. It seemed like it would take an act of Congress just to join, whereas Myspace was like the playground around the corner...anyone can join.

As time has passed, though, as with any new playground, Myspace has become dilapidated. At the same time, Facebook has opened the floodgates for anyone to join.

A while back they changed their privacy policy to where if you post anything on someone's wall, it pops up on everyone' (on our friend list) news feed. Like just about everyone else, I'm not a fan of broadcasting what I say to someone on their wall to everyone. If they want to read it that bad, then they can go to that person's wall and read it, otherwise, its none of their business. When you left a comment on Myspace, it never became a huge story for all to see.

Recently, I've noticed this new application, or something...not really sure what it is, that lets you know who views your profile. Here is my query...is it really that big of a deal to know who views your profile? Most people, at least on my list, have their profiles set to private, so the only people that would be looking at it would be those on their friends list. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they the people you want looking at your profile? Isn't that why you approved them?

Sometimes I really do wonder why I even bother with this site. Then I remember how utterly pointless the other option, Twitter, is.

We's gonna have some words!!!

Either Netflix or the US Postal Service and I are gonna have some words! Why? Well, I was supposed to get my usual 3 movies today, 1 of which I watch, but didn't get any. That's not the big deal. Occasionally it happens that the mail is slow for whatever reason, but somehow the movies they sent yesterday got turned back in today. WTF?!?

I'm not sure what kind of madness this is, but I'm not a happy camper about it, let me tell ya. This better not be a regular occurrence.

On the plus side, I reported that I never got them and they sent replacements this afternoon. So, it could be worse, but at the same time I'm still not happy right now.

Does it really matter?

Remember a few months back when Tiger Woods had that accident and somehow it snowballed into this whole media spectacle and women started coming out of the woodwork saying they had some kind of affair with him? Well, apparently, he's set to have a press conference tomorrow morning and apologize as well as tell the world about his plans.

Two things about this...first, does it really matter? I mean, did he do any damage to any of us? No. If he did, its nothing more than damage to what we all though of him, but actually, as bad as this sounds, it makes him seem human. The fact that this is such a big deal, though, is ridiculous. There really is no need for him to even have this press conference. The only person he needs to apologize to is his wife.

The second this is we better all get ready for another long stretch of the media analyzing and scrutinizing every single aspect of this press conference and any and everything about it. You know what I mean, they'll say something like he blinked twice that means he wasn't sorry, or he had corn flakes for breakfast that means he made it all up, etc. This is all going to be dragged out until some other controversy like Brad Pitt leaving Angelina Jolie for Tom Cruise comes along.

Basically, I'm saying that this whole thing is way over covered, but at least its kept us from being forced to hear coverage of Heidi and Spencer or Jon and Kate, or some other media whores...except the Jersey Shore orange people, who actually stopped folks from talking about him in the first place, maybe, and I can't believe I'm saying this, they can do it again?

Laissez les bon temps roulez

Happy Mardi Gras Pictures, Images and Photos

Halftime

A few fays ago I mentioned that the Super Bowl halftime show featuring The Who was nothing more than a way for the NFL to cover their butts and play it safe and conservative since the Janet Jackson debacle a few years back.

Again, nothing against The Who, but they just weren't that great. I've heard them perform a lot better, and while they are one of the greatest acts of all time, their relevance to those that actually stick around and pay attention to the Super bowl halftime show is almost null and void. I'm sure there were more than a few out there who had to ask their parents (or grandparents) who they were.

Fast forward to Sunday night and NBA All-Star game's halftime show featuring Shakira and Alicia Keys. Here we have two very talented, sexy women who put on an extremely entertaining show and there was nary a bit of controversy to be found.

The argument has already started amongst columnists, pundits, and their ilk about which halftime show was better. Personally, I'm leaning more towards the ladies' show. Neither of them gave their best performances and they still did better than The Who, who seemed to have been doing nothing more than hiding behind a laser show, or at least using it to distract out short-attention span society.

Either way, I'll let you decide.

Here's The Who at the Super Bowl

...and here we have Shakira and Alicia Keys (sorry, I couldn't find it in one video)

So, which show was better in your eyes (and ears)?

Eye Candy 2/14

Female Hottie: Padma Lakshmi

Hands down one of the hottest chefs to ever put on (or take off) an apron, Padma Lakshmi has helped make chefs sexy. Currently she hosts Top Chef. One of the things that strikes me as impressive about her, besides her breathtaking beauty is her insistence that her scar never be airbrushed out of photos. Not sure that the reason is, but it has something do with surviving a wreck. Did I mention she's soon to join the ranks of the MILFs?

Male Hottie: Allen Payne

Allen Payne is exactly a household name, but he has been branded a certified hottie by many members of the female community. Currently he is starring in the TBS sitcom, Tyler Perry's House of Payne, but you may recognize him for the last couple of season of The Cosby Show, or have seen him in Jason's Lyric, New Jack City, or The Perfect Storm.

Random Hottie from a movie or TV show seen this week: Alison Lohman

The movie Gamer brings us this week's random hottie, Alison Lohman. You may have seen her in Big Fish, Flicka, 7th Heaven, Matchstick Men, most recently in Drag Me to Hell or heard her in Beowulf. Hopefully we'll see more of her in the future.

MILF: Halle Berry

We welcome back our first female hottie, Halle Berry, this time in the category of MILF. What hasn't already been said about this ridiculously gorgeous woman? She has done it all, and with the birth of her daughter in 2008, she became a bonafide MILF. Now we wait for her to get her career back in full swing her next movie is said to be Nappily Ever After...no release date to my knowledge). Until then, its just a matter of laughing at how a woman can even look this fine when she's slumming it!

Classic/Retro Hottie: Zsa Zsa Gabor

A few weeks ago, our classic hottie, was Eva Gabor. Well, this week, we bring you her sister, Zsa Zsa. Perhaps best known for her numerous marriages (she may be 2ndto Liz Taylor in terms of marriages...lol), Zsa Zsa actually did have a bit of a career. Starring in both the big and small screen, yet nothing as notable as her sister's stint on Green Acres or voice work with Disney, but she has found lots of cameo work before her surgery in 07. Career aside, she was quite the looker.

Southern Snow

A couple months ago, they canceled school and alot of work because it was below freezing. You know, a "cold day". Well, today they did the same thing, but this time it actually snowed! Yes, it snowed in Louisiana.

Nothing wrong with that, but the most important part of this is that I get a 5 day weekend! Woohoo!

How do I get a 5 day weekend? Well, there's today, the weekend, and Monday and Tuesday (Mardi Gras Break...best part of teaching in La...lol). Pretty sweet deal. Wonder if it'll snow again on Wednesday. I won't complain!

The thing about the snow, though, is that it was some giant snowflakes. They looked liked the kind you see in those old black and white movies...hahaha

Of course, it'll probably all be melted by lunchtime, but there may be some more to come later. Oh well, I'll just enjoy the day(s) off.

You bitch!!!

No, I'm not talking about any of you. Today, I had a red letter day in my career, as I had to actually send a kid to the office for calling a female student a bitch.

Now, I've never been one to called members of the female species out of their name...well, with the exception of one particularly nasty ex-girlfriend in college that took out my heart stomped on it, put it back in, and hit repeat.

As I was saying, this kid called this chick a bitch, and I had to send him to the office, but this got me to thinking. Pending the connotation, had he have been a gay guy, calling this girl a bitch wouldn't have been that big a deal.

Think about it. When gay guys call girls bitches, its like a couple guys trash talking. So, what's the deal with the double standard? I'm dumbfounded by this, and ashamed that I had to adhere to it, but she was in tears about this (you know how emotional middle schoolers are), and I have to follow the rules.

So, do any of you have any thoughts on the matter?

What works for one does not necessarily mean it'll work for others

Yesterday, news broke that Christopher Nolan will be "mentoring" the reboot of the Superman franchise. Spider-Man is getting an unnecessary reboot. Captain America is going to be some sort of musical. Who knows what other madness is going on out there in the comic book movie land.

Let's start with Captain America. Yes, you read right, its going to be some sort of musical. Calm down, its not going to be a full out song and dance musical, but rather they're going to change the story to where he is a performing member of the USO in order to justify the costume. WTF?!? Does no one believe in suspension of disbelief anymore? Do they really need to mutate his origin just to explain the costume? Granted, this is just early news, and could be changed between now, filming, and the release of The First Avenger: Captain America, but it still doesn't sit right with me. As bad as that 1990 movie was, this just seems to make that look like a cinematic masterpiece.

Spider-Man is getting a reboot. As much as I despise and detest reboots, this one is the most unnecessary I've ever heard of. All the pieces were in place for Spider-Man 4, then the day before filming was set to start, they up and notify everyone they wanted to go in a new direction. My guess is they thought Spider-Man 3 was too disappointing. Fact is, as bad as some think it was, it really wasn't, just needed better execution, and more of a balance between Venom and Sandman, instead of just bringing Venom in of the last 15 minutes. Anyway, my point is, when you reboot something, its usually 10-15-20 yrs after the last film. It's barely been 5, and they're rebooting? To make matters worse, they're going to make him a teenager. The fanboys are none to happy about this, and neither are us casual fans. Of course, they're doing this just to appeal to the teen crowd obviously, and probably will cast someone like Taylor Lautner or someone that has no acting talent, but will appeal to the screaming girls. What a waste, but I will keep an open mind until I see the finished project. Of course, if it flops, they'll be sorry they didn't just continue with the original plans. Its not like they haven't made them a butt load of money, or anything.

Superman has had his issues since Superman II was taken over by a different director halfway through it and just bombed. Then there was Superman Returns which just didn't seem to be anything more than a glorified Superman drama, rather than action flick. Since then, they've been trying to get Superman on the big screen, especially with the rights to the character returning to the estate of his creator at the end of next year (don't quote me on that). In what they believe is going to make it a surefire hit, they've brought in Christopher Nolan to "mentor" things. Nolan is a good director and all, but this is one of those moves that seems to be done just because The Dark Knight was such a big hit. Newsflash, people, Superman is not Batman! What works for one is not going to work for the other. Superman is not a dark, gritty character like the Dark Knight. All of Nolan's films have been dark and gritty, and depending on how much input he has on the forthcoming Superman film (which has yet to be written), will probably follow suit. *SIGH*

At least Green Lantern won't be going down that dark road. Of course, I'm not exactly sure what New Orleans has to do with him, but that's where they're filming it.

Anyway, this is a copycat world. As soon as folks see that one thing works, they change their plans accordingly. For instance, before Avatar, the only 3D movies were the animated ones, now it seems like everything is in 3D. I'm surprised they haven't announced Valentine's Day in 3D!!!!

Super Bowl Musings

Unless you've been living under a rock the since Sunday night, you are more than aware that the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl. Those are words I thought I'd never say/type, but sure enough, it happened. Congratulations are in order for them.

Living down here in south Louisiana, you can imagine I've gotten more than an oversaturation of hearing about them. However, there have been a bit less of them than I expected.

Let me talk about halftime for a second. The Who were awesome, don't get me wrong, but who are they? I mean, let's face it, much of the audience that watches the game (myself included) wasn't around when they were in their heyday. I'm not saying it was a bad choice, but I just think they could have found someone a bit more relevant.

I realize that the whole Janet Jackson thing a few years back has the NFL shaking in their boots to let a modern artist perform at halftime, but they need grow a pair. I'm not saying they need to get Lil' Wayne, Adam Lambert, or some other controversial act, but what about Alicia Keys, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Kings of Leon, Beyonce, or something along those lines? Those are all modern artists who I think would be a good choice. Maybe its just me, though.

Also, 30 minutes for halftime! For the coaches and the performers this isn't bad, but put yourself in the player's heads, especially the ones that are on a hot streak, or the team that is losing. They're ready to get back out there, and having to sit in the locker room for 30 minutes is just making them ansy, kinda like having to wait 2 weeks to play the game. Of course, nothing is gonna be done about this since its all about the money and ratings, and the players don't matter.

My disdain for the Saints aside, the game wasn't half bad, but the let down had to have been the commercials. Yes, I said the commercials.

Face it people, alot of us tune in to watch the commercials just as much as the game. I know that this is one of the few times of the year, if not the only time, that I actually don't flip through the channels during the commercials.

Usually, though, there is some commercial that sticks in your mind, but this year, it was a bit of a letdown. Sure there were some good ones, but a month from now, I seriously doubt that I'll remember what commercials were shown.

That just isn't right. I feel kind of robbed! I expect to see something that I'll remember! lol

So, it wasn't a good Sunday for me. The freakin' Saints won (which literally made me sick to my stomach) and there weren't any memorable commercials. Ugh! Oh, and to top it off, football season is over now, so now it's on to total boredom until March Madness and the NBA Finals (the only thing that comes even close to keeping my attention until the season starts back) lol

Musical Monday

Let's swing a little bit on this Musical Monday, shall we? One of my favorite songs of all time is "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy". It may even be responsible for my picking up trumpet in the first place. Who knows? Anyway, enjoy The Andrews Sisters singing this signature hit of theirs.

FYI...this version is from the Abbott & Costello movie Buck Privates

Quote of the Week

Reading while sunbathing makes you well-red

At least I'm not the only that lives down here that isn't brainwashed

Living in Louisiana, especially south Louisiana, the past couple of weeks has been painful to say the least. I seriously considered taking time off and go visit my friend in West Texas until after the Super Bowl.

Why, you mask? Well, the New Orleans Saints are in the Super Bowl, and as I've mentioned in a previous entry, from the moment they punched their ticket to the big game, people have been jumping on the bandwagon and saying they deserve to win it for the city.

Look, I'm all for New Orleans. I love the city, but those hurricanes happened 5 yrs ago, get over it. Saying they deserve it is like saying the NY Giants or NY Jets deserve it because of 9/11, even though that was 9 yrs ago. Disasters happen, you take time to heal, then get over it.

For whatever reason, they won't let it go, and remind folks about it every chance they get. It's really annoying. However, that's not the point of this blog.

Read this:

A Louisiana high school student says he was sent home for wearing an Indianapolis Colts jersey Friday - the day the principal encouraged students to wear New Orleans Saints black and gold as the teams get ready to face off in the Super Bowl.

``If they tell other students to support their team, why can't I support mine?'' Brandon Frost, 17, told The Associated Press. The senior at Maurepas High School moved three years ago from Indianapolis to the rural town 30 miles from Baton Rouge.

A Livingston Parish School Board member said Frost wasn't sent home, but was told he couldn't wear the blue jersey at school. Keith Martin, whose district includes Maurepas, said the school uniform had been relaxed only for black and gold.

He said he planned to ask school system attorneys whether that violated Frost's right to free speech, as the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana contends.

State ACLU director Marjorie Esman sent a letter to Principal Steven Vampran, asking him to wipe Frost's record of any discipline stemming from the incident.

Vampran declined to comment.

Martin said he had talked with both Vampran and Frost's father, Larry Frost.

``I think we got things worked out,'' Martin said.

According to Martin, a friend of Brandon Frost's had asked Vampran on Thursday whether Brandon could wear a Colts jersey, and had been told ``no.''

During a class on Thursday, Frost said, he talked about his plans to wear his jersey rather than Saints colors. He said the teacher warned him he'd get in trouble.

Larry Frost said he didn't know about that when Brandon asked Thursday whether he could wear the jersey. He said he told his son to come home if he was hassled too much.

The Colts and Saints play Sunday in the Super Bowl, and emotions have run high in Louisiana as fans celebrate the first Super Bowl appearance for the beleaguered franchise.

Brandon Frost said Vampran called him out of his first class Friday and told him, ``I don't recall saying you could wear a Colts jersey on Black-and-Gold Day.''

He said he told the principal that his father had given him permission to go home if it was a problem.

``He started to get angry with me,'' Frost said. ``I thought I remember him saying, 'If you like Indiana so much, why don't you go back?'''

Vampran has acknowledged that he should not have said that, Martin said. He said no one sent Frost home - but no one kept him from leaving rather than changing shirts.

Larry Frost said he called the ACLU rather than the school because he was too angry.

``Louisiana would be proud of him anyway,'' Larry Frost said. ``He wore Joseph Addai's jersey.''

The Colts running back is a graduate of Louisiana State University.

Yeah, you read right. They sent the kid home for wearing a Colts jersey. Apparently, that's some sort of crime. Heaven forbid you're not a Saints fan. They can say what they want and try to spin it into saying that it wasn't about him not wearing a Saints jersey, but we all know that's what this is truly about.

My point of view here is that this does violate some free speech law, especially when the principal said they can wear Saints stuff, but what about Colts fans?

A few years ago, when the Saints lost to the Bears, the school I was working for literally set up counseling sessions for the "bereaved". As if that wasn't bad enough, I had a student was was a die hard Patriots fan, and was totally devastated that they lost to the Colts. She went to the counselors and was turned away. WTF?!?

As I said before, its like it is a crime to be a fan of any other team down here. It is ridiculous.

Personally, I hope this kid gets to sue the school and wins. It's one thing for a principal to say wear your school shirt (assuming they don't already wear uniforms) or something, and quite another to say wear LSU, or wear the Saints. Not everyone, contrary to popular belief down here, likes them. Some people downright loathe them.

As much as I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game, I'll be glad when its over, one way or the other.

Grammys

This Sunday, the Grammy aired on CBS. Apparently, this was one of the highest rated airings since the early 90s. You remember those days, don't you, before the internet, HDTV, and 50 gazillion networks filled with mostly reality TV crap. Anyway, I didn't watch the entire show, but I did flip through when my usual Sunday night shows (The Simpsons, The Cleavland Show, Family Guy, American Dad, and the next to last episode of Worst Cooks in America) went to commercial.

From what I've heard, though, it wasn't much of an awards show. Call me a purist, but I've always been under the impression that an awards show is where they hand out awards.

Now, don't get me wrong, the performances are fine and dandy (and expose who really has talent and who lip syncs), but it seemed like everytime i flipped someone else was performing. If I wanted to see that much useless performing, I'd watch that needs to be put out its misery MTV music awards show.

Having said that, though, I was able to catch the Michael Jackson tribute. It was very moving, but I have a couple of issues with it. First of all, they had Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, and...Carrie Underwood? singing. Not to take anything away from Carrie, despite my anti-country music bias, she is very talented, but she just didn't seem to fit with that group (not that Celine was a perfect fit, either). The other thing was the 3D aspect.

I'm not going to go on some tirade about 3D right now, but who actually had the glasses? To my knowledge you can't just go buy the glasses anywhere, and folks that have to see a 3D movie of late, more than likely put the things in that little recycling bin at the door when the movie is over. I don't believe there were any kind of promotions or anything to get free glasses, either, so while it may have been a cool idea and all, it didn't seem well thought out from that point of view.

I could also say something about Michael's children and how well-spoken they were. That truly was one of the most moving parts, hearing them speak about their father.

The other thing I have issue with, was how the highly overrated (in terms of her music and looks) Taylor Swift butchered Stevie Nicks' "Rhiannon". She even forgot the lyrics. If you looked on Stevie's face, you could tell she was doing that just for the paycheck.

Last year, the Grammys did this crap where a "young, hip artist" (it was the Jonas Bros) teamed with a legend (Stevie Wonder). That was even worse, and they're still butchering his music. I can't remember what it was, but they were performing somewhere and just defecated all over like his entire songbook.

Back to Taylor, apparently she won for artist of the year or something. Again, I'm very anti-country music, and think she's highly overrated, but all that aside, I just don't think she deserved it. My thinking is that she's still getting sympathy from voters from that whole Kanye West incident during the summer. Personally, I think Lady Gaga or Beyonce should have received that award. They are both infinitely more talented, but then again, I'm not a stuck up,m stuffed shirt, music critic who voted for some overrated teen who they felt sorry for, now am I?

All that aside, I really wish I could have watched the entire ceremony, live, but we can't always have what we want, right? I'm still watching bits and pieces, and am impressed with the performances, but again, this was an awards show, not some type of concert, y'know?

Maybe I'm alone in thinking that, though.

Hack!

I seriously despise hackers. I think I blogged about this once before, but I boggle my mind to think that someone actually sits around trying to create programs meant to steal someone's facebook password. Yes, that's right, my facebook account was hacked.

Now, back in the day when myspace wasn't the abandoned amusement park of the internet, my account, along with everyone else I know (whether they were on my friends list or not) was hacked in one way or another. Facebook, up until recently, hasn't had any issues with hackers.

I guess with their revised "privacy" policy, hackers feel its open season. I've already had a couple of friend requests from random people that do not exist. At first, I thought maybe they were one of my blog readers or someone from my past who I just forgot, but after asking around, it turns out they did not exist, so I denied their request.

This brings me back to my original topic. Facebook, as of right now, is supposedly the biggest social network site. You would think they would have a better way to filter fake profiles and such.

The fact that they don't have better filters and have become so lax with their security, not to mention don't seem to care about their users' privacy (posting anything anymore almost automatically makes it available for everyone unless your privacy settings say otherwise).

I guess with all this hacking and lack of privacy, soon enough another site will rise. Facebook would do well to learn from the demise of myspace. It had the same problems and now look at it. Guess they'll learn, right?

In the meantime, I suppose I better change my password and hope that works (and that I'll remember it). Stupid hackers!!!!
