August 1, 1981...a new cable channel is launched that showed music videos. It was known as Music Television (MTV)
27 years later that same channel is not even recognizable and the fact that is still dares to call itself MTV when the only music they show are clips between shows, partial videos on TRL, and a show that was spawned by artists begging for videos FNMTV is insulting to my intelligence.
Last year, at the VMAs, Justin Timberlake accepted his award for best song or something and emphatically told MTV to start playing videos again. Now, I don't know about you, but that would have been enough for me to yank all the crappy reality stuff they keep on a constant loop and the unnecessary showings of Top Model. Of course, that would make too much sense, and it took them nearly a year to come up with a show that *GASP* showed videos. FNMTV is a throwback to the old days of MTV, although with the audience screaming through the videos and the annoying British news guy that has to talk to everyone about doing stuff on-line it takes away from the experience. Still it's a start. Hopefully more video shows will be coming back to MTV.
I was reading on wikkipedia, that they haven't shown videos all summer except for on TRL and FNMTV. WTF?!? Is the channel not called MUSIC Television? Where is the music? If they're not gonna show videos, then they need to change their name to crappy reality TV.
BTW...speaking of the VMAs. What is the point of having a show about videos if you don't show them? Am I alone in thinking this?
The "geniuses" running MTV apparently think no one will sit through videos anymore. It's all about the money, not the music. Sad, sad, sad...
Well, let's go back shall we. On this day 27 years ago, this was the first video played. Enjoy!
Hapy Birthday MTV(even if they've corrupted you)!
